Shaelin

Shaelin was one of the first dwarves created by the Olympians when they moved to Cimmeria. He fought alongside Sadroston against the goblins. When Sadroston retired, Shaelin continued his service under Karnafaust‘s leadership. Shaelin’s strength on the battlefield, wisdom in council, and commitment to moral justice earned him a place by King Karnafaust’s side. Lord Shaelin helped his king establish the Dwarven Nation at Fangaroot after they left the Conclave.

Shaelin was set adrift when Kenderax attacked Fangaroot and killed King Karnafaust. Prince Cogard was born during the flight from Fangaroot. Lord Shaelin swore vengeance against Kenderax and all dragons. Due to his experience under King Karnafaust, Shaelin was one of the organizing members of the Dwarven Regency Council. While he did his best to lead the people during Cogard’s minority, Shaelin’s sage advice was ignored by the greedier members of the Council. The Dwarven Nation unfortunately fractured during the years of the Dwarven Regency Council.

When King Cogard came of age, Shaelin was quick to bend the knee to his sovereign and relinquish the Regency. King Cogard rewarded Shaelin with lordship over Dalleer. Less than a decade later the dragon monarchs attacked Cimmeria. To preserve his new capital of Jord, King Cogard surrendered to the dragons. Lord Shaelin had sworn an oath to resist the dragons after the loss of Fangaroot, but he gritted his teeth and followed his king’s orders.

King Cogard and Queen Pristanon had quadruplet sons that they sent to be tutored with prominent dwarven noble families. Shaelin accepted Prince Yentbern as his ward. Dalleer had become a multi-racial melting pot and Yentbern was raised to respect the other races. The immigration of the dwarves from Dalleer to Jord gave plenty of opportunity for halflings, humans, and elves to step in and work together for the improvement of Dalleer. When his wardship was completed, Yentbern had a healthy respect for hardwork, not matter who supplied it.

With his duty to his king completed, Lord Shaelin asked to be released from his liege’s service. Shocked, but appreciative for what Shaelin had done, King Cogard granted the request. Shaelin passed over his son and named Björn, a respectable and qualified friend of his, as his successor.

With the leadership of Dalleer taken care of, Shaelin began working on fulfilling the vow he had ignored decades ago. He would kill Kenderax and reclaim Fangaroot for the dwarves. Shaelin asked all like-minded people of Dalleer to go with him to Fangaroot and slay the evil dragon that had cast them out of their home generations before. Many dwarves went with Shaelin along with a few of the other races that had settled in Dalleer.

Shaelin’s mission was half-successful. With the warband’s help Shaelin succeeded in killing Kenderax, but the kobolds were too numerous to remove from the city. Additionally, Kenderax slew Shaelin in the fighting. Shaelin’s army retreated, unable to reclaim their commander’s body.

The Battle to Reclaim Fangaroot was one of the inciting incidents for the Dragon War.

Welcome to the GoCorral website! I’m Isaac Shaker and this is a place for me to write about D&D and occasionally other topics. I host a podcast called Setting the Stage that interviews different DMs about their campaigns. I’m currently focused on completing the Cimmeria campaign setting and turning it into a book.

76 – Flying Island Worlds (Alan and Fractus) Setting the Stage, Campaigns for D&D and Other RPGs

Alan tells us about his Daggerheart campaign setting, Fractus, that is launching on Kickstarter soon. Fractus was a normal planet until it exploded and stopped halfway through. Now bunches of asteroids rotate a swirling magical maelstorm at the center of the planet. The people of Fractus survive on the asteroids which are large enough to support life. The land is now separated by air rather than oceans, resulting in a different path for technology along the lines of flight rather than sea travel.Fractus is available on Kickstarter at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/icv1/fractus-the-broken-worldAlan also has a big catalog of TTRPG products he's produced in the past that you can check out on DriveThruRPG: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/publisher/17830/alan-tuckerIn addition to his TTRPG writing, Alan has written a few novels that you can find links to on his website: http://www.alantucker.net/ For the latest updates on what Alan's doing you can follow him on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tuckerauthor.bsky.socialOur website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show?
