Previous: Cimmerian Timeline Part 43

Earlier in the events of my tabletop campaign I made a set of small adventures around the small village of Harbinston. They revolved around the past exploits of Sherlock, Burne, Sherry, and a fourth unnamed party members. That adventuring party had been active twenty years previously, but split up due to… something. Well, now I’ve finally decided what the something was!

466BCE: Sherlock finished his training at the Mages Guild in Phoenix. He hired some guards and bought some trained dogs. He used his magic, the guards, and the dogs to raid monster lairs east of Phoenix. Sherlock intensely studied the magical items they found in the lairs.

464BCE: Sherlock found a stone tablet with a puzzle map. The tablet described the location at the map’s end as a tower of infinite height with access to absolute power within. The map spoke of terrible guardians at the tower as well. Sherlock knew his dogs and mercenaries would be no match for the tower’s defenses. He signed on a warrior, a priest, and a scout to help him. The warrior was named Burne, the priest was named Sherry, and the scout was named Egon.

463BCE: Following Sherlock’s puzzle map proved difficult. The adventuring band took many months to decipher the clues and find their next step along the path. While traveling together Burne and Sherry started a romantic relationship.

462BCE: Sherlock, Egon, Burne, and Sherry finally found the tower. It was not infinite, but as they entered they discovered it was larger on the inside. After defeating the tower’s guardians and examining the surroundings they learned that the tower’s power could only be activated from a separate location. Sherlock and Egon stayed at the tower while Burne and Sherry went to the other location.
As the quartet activated the tower, Sherlock’s awareness expanded. Of the two pairs, one in each pair would die. The other would be granted infinite knowledge or perfect being. Sherlock took infinite knowledge for himself while Burne became the stronger than any other mortal. In the process, Egon and Sherry died.
Burne swore vengeance against Sherlock and attacked the tower. Unfortunately, the tower granted Sherlock infinite magical power as long as he stayed within it. Burne retreated and settled in the nearby village of Harbinston.

450BCE: Burne turned to banditry with others in Harbinston.

442BCE: Terroc’s adventuring party came to Harbinston with medicine for a endemic plague. Due to a mistaken identity they accidentally engaged Burne’s bandits in combat. Burne was slain in the fighting.

I’m Isaac

Welcome to the GoCorral website! I’m Isaac Shaker and this is a place for me to write about D&D and occasionally other topics. I host a podcast called Setting the Stage that interviews different DMs about their campaigns. I’m currently focused on completing the Cimmeria campaign setting and turning it into a book.

Setting the Stage Podcast

71 – Aaron Ryan and Dissonance/The End Setting the Stage, Campaigns for D&D and Other RPGs

I talked with Aaron Ryan about two of his book series, Dissonance and The End.Dissonance is a near future world where aliens have attacked, killing most humans and animals on Earth and driving humans into hiding underground. Humans finally develop technology to fight back and the war enters a new stage while the characters also struggle to determine the motivation for the alien invasion and nefarious actions of the government. The End is a Christian End Time series based loosely on the events described in Revelations. A man calling himself Nero has risen to rule over the world and he has outlawed Christianity. Robots called Guardians hunt Christians throughout the world, murdering them on the spot if they don't recant their faith. A resistance movement works in the shadows against Nero, but things aren't looking good for them.We talked about the basics of those settings along with how they could be adapted for RPG campaign settings. My main recommendations were Ashes Without Number, Spire, and Blades in the Dark.If you're interested in reading Aaron's books you can find them at most any bookstore or library. Both of the series are also being adapted into movies, but aren't publicly available yet. Aaron's website is https://authoraaronryan.com/ for the latest updates on his work. Next up for Aaron is the Talisman series that covers events within the "Aaronverse" in the decades between Dissonance and The End.Our website: https://gocorral.com/stsWant to be on the show?
