Barakah

Barakah was an NPC with a sliver of a backstory that one of my players adopted as his PC. He greatly expanded Barakah’s place within Cimmeria. While I helped with some parts of the conception, Throgg rightly retains most of the credit and this entry would be incomplete without mentioning it.

Barakah

Barakah is the last of the sand giants and the vessel of Ammutseba the Demogorgon. His life was saved by Hektor and he promised to fight against the Aractrashan wizard’s enemies. He helped Hektor and the Exiles briefly against the Dragovinians, but was overwhelmed by the dangerous beast within him. He consumed his own ally, Zelus, and fled to parts unknown.

Barakah was born several hundred years ago amid a sand giant society that was threatened by outside forces. Continue reading

Cimmerian Timeline Part 6

Previous: Cimmerian Timeline Part 5

Continuing to include more events from the Characters of Cimmeria in the timeline. In this post I’ll be adding dates detailing the events in the lives of Delain, Amalgami the Hero, Toffoun, and new events in Cecilia’s life. A few events from previous timeline posts are included here as well to provide context for the new material.

989BCE: Delain was born to a young milk maid. She claimed his father was Ares the Battle Rager.

966BCE: Baelund’s Wolf attacked the outskirts of Phoenix, sending the city into chaos for years.

964BCE: Delain killed Baelund’s Wolf. He was proclaimed King of Phoenix as reward for this deed.

963BCE: King Delain set about fixing the civic problems of Phoenix and reforming the city’s legal code to recognize the power of the guilds. Delain ruled well for many years.

961BCE: King Delain took the Halfling, Stofara, as his mistress.

960BCE: Toffoun was born as the fourth son of the Firebeard family.

933BCE: Zeus mates with and impregnates Brina, a priestess of Hera. The Queen of the Gods curses Brina, stating that she will not give birth on dry land.

932BCE: Brina wanders the land unable to give birth like Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis. She entered labor but could not deliver. Traveling from place to place she collapsed in the Jenarild River. The river’s god allowed her to give birth for the riverbed was not “dry land.” The child was named Amalgami. Jenarild married Brina and raised Amalgami as his adopted son.

930BCE: Toffoun takes his vows as a priest of the Olympic Pantheon, swearing to serve all the gods as a holy man. He left his family to live in a temple with the other priests.

925BCE: Toffoun became enamored with the rites and rituals of Ares. He devoted more and more time to practicing with weapons and armor. He began to challenge every armed visitor to the temple, wishing to practice his skills in duels.

920BCE: Pressure was put upon old King Delain to produce an heir. He married Stasia, the daughter of the Fighter’s Guildmaster. His new wife was ignored as Delain continued to spend most of his time with Stofara.

914BCE: Amalgami turned 18 and left home to travel the world and gain fame as a hero. He went downriver, slaying gnolls and bandits on the way. He stopped in Phoenix, where he fell in love with King Delain’s wife, Queen Stasia. Amalgami and Stasia fell in love and the son of Zeus stayed a long time in the city.

913BCE: Jovy and Cecilia began their voyage on the Mira Miro. They sailed the ship into the Caspian Sea where they slew many sea monsters.
Amalgami impregnated Queen Stasia of Phoenix and fled the city towards the south.

912BCE: Amalgami joined up with Jovy and Cecilia, serving on the Mira Miro and slaying the occasional monster alongside the captain and the first mate.

910BCE: After having his fill of the inner sea, Amalgami left the Mira Miro. He consulted an oracle who told him to climb Doom Peak. He fought and killed a handful of white dragons as he ascended the mountain. At the top he was struck by lightning and blacked out. He awoke with the power to fly and summon lightning.
Delain grew too old and unfit to rule Phoenix. Power transitioned into the hands of the Guildmasters.

909BCE: Amalgami traveled east to visit his family. While stopped at Greshendale, the city was attacked by a modest band of trolls. Amalgami fought them using his electric powers alongside the wizard, Tentineh. The two became friends before Amalgami left town to continue into the east.

908BCE: Jovy and Cecilia removed the greatest threats to sailors on the Caspian. Cecilia retired to her hometown, now named after her.
Greshendale is attacked by trolls. Tentineh summoned the inferno slaad to kill them, but lost control of the demon. Tentineh spent months researching a way to contain the slaad.
Delain died. The parentage of his heir uncertain. The guilds of Phoenix ruled on.

907BCE: Tentineh bound the slaad in a prison. Fearing a similar attack by trolls or some other threat in the future, Tentineh decided to secretly break the dragon’s edict prohibiting humanoid armies. He began teaching the people of Greshendale how to use magic in tactical formations.
Amalgami arrived at the temple where Toffoun served as a priest. The two dueled to a stand-still and Toffoun agreed to adventure with Amalgami. The pair traveled around the Aral Sea, defeating monsters and bandits as they went.

905BCE: Hargath the Orc warlock attacked the town of Cecilia. Cecilia the Salt Champion defended her eponymous birthplace along with her childhood friends. The warlock was defeated, but his sorcerous eye forced Cecilia’s friends to attack her. Left with no choice she slew them. Cecilia fell into a state of severe depression.

903BCE: Rounding the southeastern edge of the Aral Sea, Amalgami and Toffoun saw a massive Goblin army led by a monstrous half-dragon. The army was moving towards the peaceful villages in Zeus’s Canvas. The Lightning Knight and his Dwarf friend led the people of the Canvas to the Dirt Plateau. At this defensive location they defeated the army and slew it’s half-dragon leader. Knowing a counterattack from the dragons was coming, Amalgami left to get help from Tentineh.

901BCE: A horde of giants attacked Greshendale as Amalgami arrived. Left with no other choice, Tentineh revealed his army in open violation of the dragons’ laws. The giants were defeated, but greater dangers would come as a result.

900BCE: Tentineh called the heroes of the land together and the Dragon War began.

Jevanicia

Jevanicia

Jevanicia was a small mining town of around 3,000 inhabitants established by Queen Anajakaze after the destruction of Tectoctar. The town was named in honor of her son, Jevaninada the Second. Jevanicia was built with military precision after scouting out a good location, both in terms of access to resources, such as the nearby mines and farm fields, and firm ground for construction of permanent buildings. In almost every way that Tectoctar was bad, Jevanicia was good.

Jevanicia was expanded from the basic plan of a military encampment. A stockade surrounded the town proper with areas marked off outside the walls for planned expansions. This blueprint gives the town decent defense capability and provides a clear layout for foreigners. Most buildings were made out of wood while permanent structures were built out of stone. The intent was to move the “temporary” structures such as the smithy and stable, to alternate locations if the town expanded in the future.

A fair amount of rice was grown in Jevanicia just as it was in Tectoctar before. Shorehorn flowers were also often used in dishes. Jevanician citizens used similar protein sources, lizards, fish, and snails, as the people of Tectoctar but with one important difference. Jevanicia was not cut off from the Xoria Empire and thus the new city had  ample access to spices to make their vile food much more palatable. Peppered snail and curried leeches are only a few of the delicacies one could’ve eaten in Jevanicia.

The new city did not serve as a refuge for exiles as Tectoctar did. Jevanicia’s primary draw was working in the mines. The city had an iron mine, a silver mine, and a stone quarry. Hundreds of tons of metal and stone were taken from the earth and sent downriver to the rest of Xoria. These raw materials were made into coins to fund the war, weapons and armor for soldiers, and keeps that protect the roads of Xoria. Unfortunately, the flow stopped recently due to an attack on the town by the Geriviar giant, Bill.

Bill believed the town was responsible for the death of his pet dog, Scruffy. He beat the buildings of the town into dust and splinters. Hundreds died in the attack in a vain effort to save their town. After Bill left Jevanicia in ruins, slavers descended on the area, capturing those who attempted to rebuild their homes. Many miners were taken captive and sold downriver. By the time the Xorian government learned of the destruction of Jevanicia it was too late to reverse the decline. No manpower could be spared to rebuild the town, so it was left abandoned.

Dorrowsan

Dorrowsan

Dorrowsan is a city with about 30,000 people living it. The city is a single structure made entirely out of magical ice. The ice doesn’t melt despite high ambient temperatures and does not chip when attacked with a non-magical weapon. It does melt when an everlasting torch is put next to it, even though such a torch is just an illusory flame that produces no heat.

The fortress’s temperature is a comfortable 72˚F (22˚C) with a slight wind in larger rooms. Sunlight penetrates the walls illuminating every room, hall, and passageway, but one cannot see through the ice into other rooms. Food, furniture, and items can be produced at will if the person doing so is in a calm state of mind. In combat a Concentration check is required of DC 15+how many rounds the combat has lasted. The created things all have a look similar to the ice and will melt if taken from the fortress.

Obviously such a paradise would attract many people, but the city is run like a mystical cult with many odd organizational principles and rituals. The societal classes are split into colors with White being on the bottom going through Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple to the highest Black. To get into the city you must give up your possessions and wear a robe according to your color. If you wish to have your items returned you are given a tattoo that signifies that you are never to enter the city again. One is upgraded from each color for doing something considered exceptional for their current ranking and downgraded for doing something dishonorable. The society’s rules are vaguely Japanese in structure.

The different ranks don’t have any significant responsibilities as the fortress provides enough that no real work is needed. Each rank simply has a level of control over lower ranks. Hence if a Yellow wanted a Red to help him make a table with their minds then the Red would have to help or risk demotion.

Dorrowsan exports a few magical items in exchange for commodities that can’t be produced by the fortress. The imports are mostly good food and other luxuries such as blankets that the fortress is incapable of making from ice.

An odd thing happens in Dorrowsan at sunrise that seriously disturbs foreigners. All of the people wake up, go outside of the fortress, and stand in what would look like a military parade. They then simultaneously empty their bowels and pee. The excrement is quickly burned by the people before they retreat to the fortress. This is done every day in silence and when mentioned to the residents of the city the event is always denied.

The leader of the city is titled The Great Lump. Prior to the events of the Second Alliance War, The Great Lump was a fire giant priest named Chirrigar. The people of Dorrowsan, instead of being unnerved by the identity of their ruler were honored to have such a wise and strong protector. The ice in the Dorrowsan shrank and retreated to accommodate space for whatever he did. Chirrigar’s scepter gave him this power and allowed him to see through the walls. The scpeter counts as a +4 Flaming Burst Mace. The scepter can also be used to control the people in the city who wear the robes or have the tattoos, but only when the sun shines its brightest, sunrise. He maintained the morning ritual as a cruel joke upon his subjects.

Chirrigar was walking through the desert after his tribe had been wiped out by a Blue Dragon when he found the scepter. He went to the Dragon’s cave and slew it, taking its hoard he spread the word to humans of his new city he had seen in a divine vision. He went to the site of the city northwest of the desert and planted a large piece of quartz he had found in the Dragon’s cave. It grew and grew and took on the shape that Dorrowsan has today.

Dorrowsan initially joined the Xorians in the Second Alliance War. Chirrigar used the scepter to physically move the icy city towards Dalleer. Upon reaching the city he challenged the Alliance to single combat. The Alliance would send forth a champion to fight the Great Lump. The winner would gain control of both Dalleer and Dorrowsan. Hektor of Lakatia represented the Alliance and defeated Chirrigar by beheading him.

The scepter that controlled the city was given to Kig Yupington. He moved the city east to Jipangu to train with other new recruits to the Alliance.

GVG Latest Cards

After playing with the new Goblins Vs. Gnomes cards in Arena I’ve determined some of the better ones.

First up! Bomb Lobber!

Bomb Lobber

While the Bomb Lobber has absurdly low stats for its cost, the battlecry is just insane. In Arena the 4 damage is basically guaranteed to kill a minion.

And after the battlecry the Bomb Lobber can still trade with most 2 or 3 cost minions.

So let’s say you play the Bomb Lobber. His battlecry destroys something. Then next turn you attack and he takes out a 2/3 minion of your opponent’s. THEN you hit him with the Recombobulator!

Recombobulator

This one’s kind of complicated, but the Recombobulator changes a Bomb Lobber into any other 5 mana cost minion card. Could be a Spectral Knight. Could be a Stranglethorn Tiger. It can even be class minions such as a the towering colossus that is the Shaman’s EARTH ELEMENTAL! Now the Bomb Lobber that already created a card advantage of two for you is a 7/8 with taunt.

Recombobulator is insane in decks with strong battlecries. I suspect a nerf incoming on the Recombobulator so that his target is random like Tinkmaster Overspark. If he’s kept as is… People might start playing Nerub’ar Weblord to counter the battlecries.

And the final card I’d like to talk about isn’t necessarily good in Arena, but it is hilarious. I present to you, Fel Reaver!

Fel Reaver

So 5 mana for an 8/8 puts it in competition with the other giant cards. Fel Reaver is different because it’s ALWAYS discounted.

But it comes with a penalty. A pretty significant one at that. Usually within two or three turns of playing him you will be out of cards.

Fortunately, Fel Reaver does not actually draw you cards, so the activation of its effect by itself will not deal you fatigue damage, but it does put you on a timer with just the cards in your hand to beat your opponent with.

The card has mixed performances. I put together a deck to try it out and uploaded the games to Youtube with the title Fel Reaver Concept. You can check it out for yourself and tell me what you think. I like the card a lot, but is it competitive? We’ll have to wait and see.
