Future History

My next campaign for Cimmeria is a time travel inspired one. I have events going as far back as desired for time travel, but going forward in time might be fun too! Thus I’ve written some future history for Cimmeria as a fourth dimensional sandbox for my players to mess around in. The campaigns of Alexander the Great and Roman expansion into the west also provide an opportunity for integration of real world events into the fantasy narrative as well.

389BCE: Without Tarigananata as a guiding influence, Xoria collapsed. The Amazons of Dradelden forced the other remnant city-states to pay tribute.

387BCE: The Dominarie Mountains became infested with eldritch horrors.

386BCE: The Dwarves sacked and burned Nox and Petar as vengeance for the wightpocalypse.

385BCE: Preta journeyed into the Dominarie Mountains with his cult to defeat the eldritch horrors. They did not return.

371BCE: Gregor died. His death set off a civil war between the orc tribes. The main players were Malak and Draggahk.

367BCE: Draggahk defeated all challengers and personally executed a captured Malak to end the Orkin Civil War.

363BCE: The highly trained mage-soldiers of Mo’nyoq led an assault that finally freed Bradel Fields from the corrupting influence of the undead.

349BCE: At the end of Hektor’s life he found Divine Amalius and managed to kill the psion. With his mission completed, Hektor collapsed and passed on to Olympus.

346BCE: Fauxmalius passed away.

342BCE: Draggahk’s grandson, King Talgahk, led an invasion of Cimmeria. As he conquered towns he took loot and freed all the slaves, swelling his army larger and larger. In the process he killed Danar and Tagenadi. The dueling school at Mo’nyoq endured, but now under orc control.

341BCE: The Dark Elves attacked Aractrash, murdering and enslaving thousands. Decades of inept leadership left the Aractrashan Kingdom unable to adequately defend itself.

336BCE: The Aractrashan Kingdom was all but eliminated after endless Dark Elf attacks.

333BCE: King Talgahk’s rampage across Cimmeria concluded. He returned to the Orc Lands with a vast pile of treasure and the Orc Nation was now a feared player within Cimmeria once more.

330BCE: In the wake of Talgahk’s Rampage the growing Mars’ Oasis Kingdom stepped in as the leading force in Cimmeria. King Alfo II conquered Eastern Cimmeria and picked up the broken remnants of Aractrash.

329BCE: Alexander the Great conquered Xoria and almost wiped out the Amazons.
Amalganus, son of Amalius, and Talon created the Pointed Hat Society to protect Cimmeria from outside threats

328BCE: Alexander the Great got into an argument with Cleitus the Black at Nox. Korm entered floating on its own and slaughtered everyone. The city was evacuated and Korm was imprisoned within Castle Xoria by the Pointed Hats.

327BCE: Absyrtus, the son of Aeëtes, long slumbering in his undead form, finally awakened. He expelled the Macedonians in an instant. Absyrtus ruled a resurgent Colchian Kingdom.

321BCE: Pirates took advantage of the wars between Alexander the Great’s successors. Trade across the Caspian’s waters was no longer safe.

311BCE: Seleucus I returned to Babylonia as Satrap. He immediately organized a navy and put an end to piracy in the Caspian Sea.

310BCE: Seleucus I conquered Cecilia and Jeutontic. Fearful of Absyrtus’s magic powers he sent gifts to the undead king and established a peaceful trade relationship with Colchis.

308BCE: Seleucus I led an invasion of Aractrash. King Alfo III of Mars’ Oasis defended his kingdom. A fierce battle left many dead. Both sides erected victory monuments which became the de facto border demarcation.

294BCE: The eldritch horrors of Dominarie spilled forth to besiege the Mars’ Oasis Kingdom. At the head of the horrors was a terrifying orc wizard.

293BCE: The orc wizard assassinated King Alfo IV and eldritch horrified the Mars’ Oasis Kingdom.

292BCE: The orc wizard attacked the Orc Lands, rapidly spreading its evil influence through the nation.

291BCE: The Pointed Hats stepped in and halted the spread of the orc wizard’s virus. Unfortunately the Aractrash, Dominarie, Shacklack, and Orc Lands remained infested with vile monsters.

280BCE: The Pointed Hats went to Antiochus I for patronage. They wanted funding in exchange for putting their magical powers at his disposal. Antiochus agreed. The Pointed Hats used their funding to research methods to purify the eldritch horrors in Eastern Cimmeria.

274BCE: The Pointed Hats discovered that by crossbreeding Aractrashan Jungle trees with the expanding trees of Bigby’s Forest resulted in something that released a pollen poisonous only to the eldritch horrors. Pointed Hat druids set to breeding and enchanting the trees of Aractrash.

269BCE: The Pointed Hats declared Aractrash free of corruption. Antiochus I approved colonization of the Jungle. The Pointed Hats moved their base from Babylonia to Aractrash. They aided the colonization effort, but their primary focus remained on the eldritch horrors in Eastern Cimmeria.

250BCE: Antiochus II of the Seleucid Empire constantly led campaigns against the other Hellene states in the west. His distracted focus allowed pirates to reemerge as a serious force in the Caspian. Aractrash and other Indian satrapies revolted. Warlords vied for control of Aractrash.

248BCE: Absyrtus conquered Cecilia and Jeutontic for the Colchian Kingdom.

247BCE: Arasces I of the Parni tribe defeated all other challengers for control of Aractrash. He crowned himself king of the new kingdom, Parthia.

230BCE: Pagerian, the daughter of Aldarian and Eamorataj established herself as the power behind the throne in Dalleer.

228BCE: Bradel Fields began taxing some peasants within Dalleer’s sphere of influence. In response, Pagerian organized an army and went to war.

226BCE: Bradel Fields lost the war with Dalleer and was forced to pay a tribute to the victorious city.

225BCE: Shalerton sheep that were left free to graze ate some crops from a Dalleer village. Hostilities escalated between the farmers and the ranchers.

224BCE: Pagerian promised the farmers that no further harm would come to them. Emboldened by her claims, the farmers on Dalleer’s northern border attacked the ranchers and killed some of them. A war broke out between Dalleer and Shalerton.

220BCE: The Shalerton-Dalleer War ended with Dalleer’s complete victory. Pagerian marched through Shalerton in a victory parade. She set up a local as a puppet governor and required tribute be paid once a year.

216BCE: The Björn of Dalleer stepped down from his office. Rather than name an insane man (who was really himself disguised as a new identity) to the throne, he named Pagerian to succeed him. She accepted gratefully. Skizofren, Björn for so many years, went on a wandering journey across Cimmeria.

213BCE: Dalleer suffered a famine due to a drought. The people blamed Pagerian and murmurs of revolt began.

212BCE: Dalleer suffered another year of drought and it seemed like the mob would topple Pagerian’s regime. Rather than give in, she arranged for food and entertainment to be brought in from Persia. Her people were satisfied and Antiochus III was happy as well with the financing needed for his wars. Additionally, Pagerian quietly had the leaders of the brewing revolt assassinated.
Antiochus III led a resurgence of the Seleucid Empire. He conquered lands south and west of the Caspian that had been absorbed by Colchis.

211BCE: Bradel Fields and Shalerton rebelled against Pagerian’s rule.

209BCE: After a cruel war, Pagerian put down the revolts in Bradel Fields and Shalerton. She spared the public, but killed the leadership of both cities. New administrators from Dalleer were put in place.
Antiochus III attacked Parthia. He took the capital of Hecatompylos. Arasces II surrendered and became a King under Antiochus III’s rule.

201BCE: Pagerian sent military assistance to the Pointed Hats in the Orclands. The army used Restnor’s Point as a resupply point.

195BCE: A disagreement broke out between the Dalleer troops in Restnor’s Point and the locals. The army ceased using the town as a base.

194BCE: Pagerian led Dalleer’s army back to Restnor’s Point to conquer the city. The battle was swift and she emerged victorious. Pagerian imposed a yearly tribute on Restnor’s Point and placed a governor in charge of the city.

190BCE: The Pointed Hats succeeded in gaining a foothold in the Orclands. Eldritch horrors were slain everywhere they were found. Orc villages were reestablished with teleportation stones to organize a Pointed Hat response if the horrors attacked in large numbers.

189BCE: With the mission accomplished in the east, the Dalleer army returned west. Along the way they conquered Balin’s Holt and imposed a tribute there as well.

187BCE: A cabal of dissidents arranged a plot to assassinate Pagerian. Unfortunately they had unwitting invited Aldarian into their group. He learned the identities of all the key members and assassinated them first to protect his daughter.

186BCE: Pagerian encouraged trade between her growing empire, the Orclands, Western Cimmeria, Parthia, and Persia. She reinvested the profits in her people creating marvelous infrastructure in the cities of Eastern Cimmeria.

177BCE: King Oglamar rose to rule the cleansed Orclands. Thankful to the Pointed Hats he promised to assist them in purifying the Shacklack Desert.

176BCE: Phraates I of Parthia inherited the throne and declared his independence from Seleucid Persia.

175BCE: Seleucus IV of Persia organized a response to Parthia’s independence but was assassinated before he could carry out his plans.

163BCE: Orc attacks on the Shacklack Desert horrors sent them fleeing over the Dominarie Mountains into Parthia. King Mithridates I of Parthia fought to defend his kingdom from the abominations.

161BCE: Seleucid Persia was embroiled in wars with the Roman Empire. Absyrtus took advantage of their weakness to reclaim Jeutontic and Cecilia.

160BCE: Pagerian organized an expedition to reclaim Phoenix from the watery races of Zelus. The army camped outside of the flooded city and probed the defenses.

159BCE: Pagerian led an assault on Phoenix, but was forced to retreat. The army returned to Dalleer. Pagerian funded research on aquatic combat to increase the people’s chances of success in a future attack.

155BCE: Pagerian led another attack on Phoenix with improved equipment for the watery terrain. The attack failed once again. Realizing her limits, Pagerian returned to Dalleer. She declared the limits of her kingdom as they currently were. The Kingdom of Dalleer would invest itself and its people rather than seek further expansion.
The waves of eldritch horrors coming over the Dominarie Mountains finally ceased. The orcs had almost eliminated the vile species. Any remnants went into hiding underground.

148BCE: Mithridates I of Parthia invaded Seleucid Persia territory.

141BCE: Mithridates I won the war with Persia, securing control of Media and Babylonia. Hobgoblins invaded Parthia. Mithradates I returned east to repel the hobgoblins.

132BCE: Mithradates I died. The hobgoblins, Persians, and orcs began salivating at the prospect of a weak Parthia.

130BCE: Seleucid Persia invaded Parthia in an attempt to reclaim the territory they lost in the 140s. Orcs and hobgoblins united to invade in the east simultaneously.

129BCE: Phraates II of Parthia defeated the Seleucids, driving their forces all the way into Syria. Phraates turned his attention to the orckin and goblinoid invasion.

124BCE: The combined might of the orcs and hobgoblins was too much. The new King Artabanus I of Parthia sued for peace and agreed to pay a tribute.

123BCE: Artabanus focused his administration on improving trade. The Caspian Sea and Parthia experienced a golden age due to trade passing through the region from Europe to India. Unfortunately, Artabanus died soon into his reign and was succeeded by Mithridates II.

118BCE: Funded by trade flowing through Parthia, Mithridates II raised an army to invade the hobgoblins and orcs. He defeated both nations and removed the tribute imposed on his predecessors.

114BCE: Mithridates II conquered west as well. He solidified Parthian control of Western Cimmeria, taking everything but Colchis.

91BCE: Mithridates II died. The Parthian royal family members each had different power bases within their large empire. The different branches began fighting with each other for control. Absyrtus planned to reconquer his lost territories in the east, but had to focus on the west due to Roman incursions.

88BCE: The Absyrtic Wars officially began between the Roman Empire and Colchis.

69BCE: Phraates III ascended to the Parthian throne. His reign marked the end of civil turmoil within the empire.

66BCE: Phraates III attempted to coordinate with Pompey of Rome to defeat Absyrtus. Pompey declined, wishing to plunder both Colchian and Parthian possessions.

63BCE: The Absyrtic Wars ended when Pompey slew the immortal Absyrtus.

57BCE: Phraates III was assassinated by his own sons, Orodes II and Mithridates IV. They fought a civil war to decide the successor.

55BCE: Crassus led a massive Roman invasion of Parthia.

54BCE: Orodes II won the civil war against his brother due to the assistance of General Surena.

53BCE: General Surena defeated Crassus at Carrhae. Orodes feared Surena’s power and had him executed. War continued between Parthia and Rome over which power would rule the Levant.

20BCE: King Phraates IV of Parthia grew tired of the decades long war with Rome. He conceded to Rome’s control over Syria and Israel. Peace came to the region.

72 – Calico and Psychomortis (Part 1) Setting the Stage, Campaigns for D&D and Other RPGs

CalicoVisions tells us about his game system and setting Psychomortis. The game is constructed to challenge players and characters to look inside themselves to find what's really important to them. In the far future the Earth has suffered from the arrival of the Iris which caused vast changes across the world. PCs are trapped beneath the Earth in a vast maze known as Pandora's Labyrinth. They seek an exit and/or spiritual absolution as they survive and explore in the dark depths. The experience is simultaneous a dungeon crawl and philosophical exercise. This is the first of two episodes about Psychomortis. Calico contacted me about how the game and setting had evolved since our first recording. This is the first recording which has the original version of Calico's world and game. The second one is more refined and filled in which you can see in part 2!Psychomortis is still in the early stages of development, but its playable!
