947BCE: Queen Shortrastor used Prince Albirnon’s disappearance as an excuse to conscript soldiers within her kingdom and invade the Underdark. Thousands of Dwarves were organized and sent into the deep in groups of various sizes “looking for the prince.” In reality these groups were raiding and pillaging the other Underdark races and species.

946BCE: The groups of Dominarie Dwarves invading the Underdark discovered evidence of Prince Albirnon’s survival in the deepest reaches of the tunnels. King Cogard arrived in the Dominarie Kingdom to lead the rescue effort personally.

945BCE: A group of Cogard’s scouts found Albirnon. A cabal of Drow witches led by a demon held the prince captive. The Dwarven soldiers killed the prince’s captors and freed Albirnon, but he was not the same young man who had gone to Shortrastor’s court. No hair grew on his head and the glint of demonic possession glowed behind Albirnon’s eyes and soon the same could be said of his rescuers as the possession passed to them. The first of a new race of Dwarves were created, the Duergar. Prince Albirnon stayed in the deep and began turning more and more of Cogard and Shortrastor’s fortune seekers to his will.

944BCE: Rumors of a new band of bald dwarves with red eyes led by a male who resembled Prince Albirnon reached the Dominarie court. Desperate to find his son, King Cogard himself went into the deep. Down in the dark Cogard met his son and recognized the corruption within him. The king and the demon fought for control of the prince. Cogard achieved a half victory. The demon was not cast out of his son, but the contagion could no longer spread. Cogard sealed the hellish presence within Albirnon and all the other afflicted, but the demon would live on in their descendants.

943BCE: Cogard brought Albirnon back to Shortrastor’s court. The Queen was informed of Albirnon’s new passenger. Not wishing to welcome a viper into her home, the Queen commanded King Cogard to remove Prince Albirnon and the other duergar from the Dominarie Mountains. The King did so, moving the duergar people to the wild regions of the western Underdark.

Characters of Cimmeria: The Dwarven Kings

Dwarf King

The Dwarves of Cimmeria are split into four races led by four kings. The four races are Hill Dwarves, Mountain Dwarves, Deep Dwarves, and Duergar. Hill Dwarves live in the lowlands of Cimmeria with a large concentration in Jord where the Hill Dwarf King is. The Mountain Dwarf Kingdom is in the Terror Mountains with their capital at Highhold. Deep Dwarves live in the tunnels of the Underdark under Northern Cimmeria. Similarly, Duergar live underneath Western Cimmeria.

Torngar, Dragonslayer, King of the Mountain Dwarves, and High King of All Dwarves

Torngar reigns over all Dwarves from his seat at Highhold. He is a gruff old man, but skilled in the arts of statecraft and war. In his youth he spent his time with a group of dragonslaying adventurers, but he has long since settled down. When the Fierce Axe of Dwarvish Lords was reclaimed from the Xorians a Kingsmoot was called. Torngar invited the other Kings to Highhold and held the meeting there to decide which of them would wield the Fierce Axe and preside over a united Dwarven people. Torngar won the Axe by promising aid for the Alliance to King Dainlin, the Generalship of the army to Deekgaon, and the reclamation of the Duergar homelands to Sandil.

Dainlin, Master of Hammers, King of the Hill Dwarves

Dainlin joined the Second Alliance just as his father had joined the First Alliance decades before. He fought alongside other Alliance soldiers in the battles leading up to the Siege of Phoenix. During the siege, Dainlin returned to Jord to placate his advisors who did not wish him to die in a battle defending foreign lands.

When the Fierce Axe of Dwarvish Lords was found by Dainlin’s great-nephew, Torin, the King toyed with the idea of taking the Axe for himself and proclaiming himself High King. Dainlin reasoned that he had to call a Kingsmoot instead. Taking the High Kingship for himself might not bring aid to the embattled Alliance and could even lead to a civil war amongst the Dwarves.

At the Kingsmoot, King Dainlin threw his support behind any who would bring the entirety of the Dwarven forces into the Second Alliance War on the Alliance’s side. Torngar agreed to this condition and Dainlin pledged his fealty to the new High King.

Deekgaon, Axe Seeker, General of the Dwarven Army, King of the Deep Dwarves

Deekgaon sought the Fierce Axe of Dwarvish Lords all his life. Often he neglected his kingly duties to practice with a magic axe he had made in imitation of the Fierce Axe or searching for its location in forgotten tomes and ancient books. Occasionally, Deekgaon left on forays to some supposed resting place of the Axe, but he always returned empty-handed.

When the Hill Dwarf Atreides unearthed the Fierce Axe during the First Alliance War, Deekgaon rushed to reclaim it, but he arrived too late. The Axe had been stolen by Amalgami and sold to the Xorians. Roaring with frustration, Deekgaon slew a few Xorians, but he could never hope to take the Axe back by force against a force such as the Xorian army or the Seven Rages. Deekgaon sunk into a depression that lasted many years.

When the Duergar were forced from their homes by the enslavement raids of Havoc the Rage, Deekgaon took his fellow Dwarves in. Duergar and Deep Dwarves lived side by side, learning each others customs and culture. Dwarven brotherhood has not been this strong in an age. This brotherhood extended into the Second Alliance War, with Deekgaon and the Duergar King, Sandil, agreeing on nearly everything.

Deekgaon was ecstatic when the Fierce Axe was reclaimed by the Hill Dwarves. At the Kingsmoot he put forth his own name to wield the Axe and lead the Dwarven people. Deekgaon cared little for the leadership, but the Axe… He had dreamed of holding it and swinging it into an enemy’s head his whole life. Sandil supported Deekgaon during the initial stages of the meeting, but the Duergar King betrayed Deekgaon later on and supported Torngar. Deekgaon insisted on receiving something during the negotiations, so the others granted him Generalship of the Dwarven Army. He grudgingly accepted this second place prize, never getting his hands on the Fierce Axe as he’d always wished.

Sandil, Trickster King, Homeless King, King of the Duergar

The Duergar King Sandil is a weaker warrior than the other Dwarven Kings, for he does not study the way of the axe, hammer, or sword, but that of magic and enchantment. When the Xorians invaded the Underdark, taking slaves and killing many others, Sandil fought back for a time. Eventually, the odds proved insurmountable. King Sandil brokered an agreement with King Deekgaon of the Deep Dwarves and fled the Western Cimmerian Underdark. Few know that this agreement was not achieved through negotiation but through magical domination. Sandil had enthralled his cousin, Deekgaon. Deekgaon’s weak will bent for Sandil, allowing a smooth transition of the Duergar into Deep Dwarf communities at the Deep Dwarf King’s insistence.

At the Kingsmoot, Sandil played Deekgaon by backing his claim to the Fierce Axe at first, before switching to his support to Torngar, whom he had always intended to back. Sandil now advises High King Torngar on most decisions he makes, slowly working himself deeper into the High King’s graces. Soon he will be close enough to Torngar to dominate him as well. Then Sandil will be the undisputed power behind the throne of one of the most powerful nations in the world.

Jord

Jord

Jord is a city for the common hill Dwarves of Cimmeria. It holds a community of over 36,000 Dwarves in its stone halls. The city proper lies beneath the confluence of the Cogardes River and the Delain Tribute. The city plan is dictated by the numerous grottos created by the rivers’ previous underground paths. The Dwarves expanded the original caverns to make a more livable and pleasant area for their daily activities. Conditions are ideal for the bearded folk, and a population of some 3,000 other races live above the city proper where the fertile soil is farmed and produce is sent below.

Jord is a royal city state ruled by a Dwarven king with all state powers focused in him. The king’s word is law and Dainlin, son of Doerlin, is the king. He has been for a hundred and fifty years. The main efforts of his reign have been in expanding mining operations and selling more metal to the Magical Lands and less to Xoria. He prefers to supply defenders in wars over offenders. In keeping with this policy, King Dainlin officially joined the Second Alliance against Xoria.

The city’s main exports are metals, stone, gems, and mushrooms. All types of metals are mined in the deep parts of Jord. Adamantite, zinc, iron, and copper veins all exist directly below the city. Mithral, gold, silver, and tin can be found at the Flower of the Deep mine to the northeast. The stone that is excavated is most often granite, but a large marble deposit exists close to the Flower of the Deep. Dainlin developed an expansion there a few years ago after eradicating the indigenous Drow population.

The mushrooms of Jord are grown with the advice and help of a large tribe of Myconid that live in the unworked caverns of the city. The small amount of Dwarven druids who live in the city assist the Myconid with magic and alter the fungus slightly to get all sorts of shapes, colors, and flavors. These odd delicacies are savored by the upper class in the Magical Lands. The Myconid circle leaders also make plenty of potions that are sold to the neighboring city states.

Jord’s alcohol supply is prodigious and almost matches that of Satronwook. Most of the grain alcohol is made on the farms above the caverns, but wine has to be imported. Luckily Dwarves aren’t fans of sissy wine, so not much is needed. They do need to import honey for mead though. Acquiring a colony of giant bees is one of Dainlin’s unexplored projects.

Jord’s military power was and is strong because almost every citizen is ready to arm themselves at the drop of a hat. Every person has a suit of armor and a weapon and most have magical, masterwork, or special material arms and armor. The police force of the city reports to Dainlin directly. The militia is well-equipped and well prepared with potions of cure and other things for every conceivable domestic disaster. 2,000 Dwarves participated in the defense of Phoenix and were captured when the Alliance abandoned the city. Rather than suffer a second defeat by bankrupting themselves to ransom the soldiers, the Alliance let the Xorians keep them. The Dwarves have been put to work as slaves, rebuilding the shattered defenses of Phoenix.

Jord is home to the third largest museum in the world, with only those of Troy and Damascus being bigger. It’s most famous exhibit is the mausoleum of dwarves, where all the renowned bearded folk hope to be laid to rest. Jovy, the human pirate and founder of Lordodo, is present at the mausoleum. He was given an honorary place there as “his beard rivaled that of any dwarf.” The museum holds many fine pieces of art, a gem collection, and a few minor artifacts.

Many changes have come to Jord since the city joined the Alliance. The city has focused on the exportation of weapons and armor to the other Alliance cities to the exclusion of Dainlin’s other pet projects. The capture of the Dwarven army has put an additional emotional strain on the citizens of Jord. They have pleaded with the King to defy the Alliance’s decree to not ransom prisoners. While Dainlin wishes to do just that, he will not as long as the Alliance forbids it.

In addition to the capture of the Dwarven army, the Battle of Phoenix also allowed for the recovery of the Fierce Axe of Dwarvish Lords. This Axe symbolizes the unity of all four Dwarf races, Hill, Mountain, Deep, and Duergar. The Axe instigated a Kingsmoot where all four Dwarven Kings gathered at Highhold in the Terror Mountains. The four kings agreed that King Torngar of the Mountain Dwarves would rule as High King as long as the entire Dwarven race joined in the war against Xoria. The Dwarven war machine has now begun to turn in earnest and will soon strike back at the Xorians.
