Previous: Cimmerian Timeline Part 5
Continuing to include more events from the Characters of Cimmeria in the timeline. In this post I’ll be adding dates detailing the events in the lives of Delain, Amalgami the Hero, Toffoun, and new events in Cecilia’s life. A few events from previous timeline posts are included here as well to provide context for the new material.
989BCE: Delain was born to a young milk maid. She claimed his father was Ares the Battle Rager.
966BCE: Baelund’s Wolf attacked the outskirts of Phoenix, sending the city into chaos for years.
964BCE: Delain killed Baelund’s Wolf. He was proclaimed King of Phoenix as reward for this deed.
963BCE: King Delain set about fixing the civic problems of Phoenix and reforming the city’s legal code to recognize the power of the guilds. Delain ruled well for many years.
961BCE: King Delain took the Halfling, Stofara, as his mistress.
960BCE: Toffoun was born as the fourth son of the Firebeard family.
933BCE: Zeus mates with and impregnates Brina, a priestess of Hera. The Queen of the Gods curses Brina, stating that she will not give birth on dry land.
932BCE: Brina wanders the land unable to give birth like Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis. She entered labor but could not deliver. Traveling from place to place she collapsed in the Jenarild River. The river’s god allowed her to give birth for the riverbed was not “dry land.” The child was named Amalgami. Jenarild married Brina and raised Amalgami as his adopted son.
930BCE: Toffoun takes his vows as a priest of the Olympic Pantheon, swearing to serve all the gods as a holy man. He left his family to live in a temple with the other priests.
925BCE: Toffoun became enamored with the rites and rituals of Ares. He devoted more and more time to practicing with weapons and armor. He began to challenge every armed visitor to the temple, wishing to practice his skills in duels.
920BCE: Pressure was put upon old King Delain to produce an heir. He married Stasia, the daughter of the Fighter’s Guildmaster. His new wife was ignored as Delain continued to spend most of his time with Stofara.
914BCE: Amalgami turned 18 and left home to travel the world and gain fame as a hero. He went downriver, slaying gnolls and bandits on the way. He stopped in Phoenix, where he fell in love with King Delain’s wife, Queen Stasia. Amalgami and Stasia fell in love and the son of Zeus stayed a long time in the city.
913BCE: Jovy and Cecilia began their voyage on the Mira Miro. They sailed the ship into the Caspian Sea where they slew many sea monsters.
Amalgami impregnated Queen Stasia of Phoenix and fled the city towards the south.
912BCE: Amalgami joined up with Jovy and Cecilia, serving on the Mira Miro and slaying the occasional monster alongside the captain and the first mate.
910BCE: After having his fill of the inner sea, Amalgami left the Mira Miro. He consulted an oracle who told him to climb Doom Peak. He fought and killed a handful of white dragons as he ascended the mountain. At the top he was struck by lightning and blacked out. He awoke with the power to fly and summon lightning.
Delain grew too old and unfit to rule Phoenix. Power transitioned into the hands of the Guildmasters.
909BCE: Amalgami traveled east to visit his family. While stopped at Greshendale, the city was attacked by a modest band of trolls. Amalgami fought them using his electric powers alongside the wizard, Tentineh. The two became friends before Amalgami left town to continue into the east.
908BCE: Jovy and Cecilia removed the greatest threats to sailors on the Caspian. Cecilia retired to her hometown, now named after her.
Greshendale is attacked by trolls. Tentineh summoned the inferno slaad to kill them, but lost control of the demon. Tentineh spent months researching a way to contain the slaad.
Delain died. The parentage of his heir uncertain. The guilds of Phoenix ruled on.
907BCE: Tentineh bound the slaad in a prison. Fearing a similar attack by trolls or some other threat in the future, Tentineh decided to secretly break the dragon’s edict prohibiting humanoid armies. He began teaching the people of Greshendale how to use magic in tactical formations.
Amalgami arrived at the temple where Toffoun served as a priest. The two dueled to a stand-still and Toffoun agreed to adventure with Amalgami. The pair traveled around the Aral Sea, defeating monsters and bandits as they went.
905BCE: Hargath the Orc warlock attacked the town of Cecilia. Cecilia the Salt Champion defended her eponymous birthplace along with her childhood friends. The warlock was defeated, but his sorcerous eye forced Cecilia’s friends to attack her. Left with no choice she slew them. Cecilia fell into a state of severe depression.
903BCE: Rounding the southeastern edge of the Aral Sea, Amalgami and Toffoun saw a massive Goblin army led by a monstrous half-dragon. The army was moving towards the peaceful villages in Zeus’s Canvas. The Lightning Knight and his Dwarf friend led the people of the Canvas to the Dirt Plateau. At this defensive location they defeated the army and slew it’s half-dragon leader. Knowing a counterattack from the dragons was coming, Amalgami left to get help from Tentineh.
901BCE: A horde of giants attacked Greshendale as Amalgami arrived. Left with no other choice, Tentineh revealed his army in open violation of the dragons’ laws. The giants were defeated, but greater dangers would come as a result.
900BCE: Tentineh called the heroes of the land together and the Dragon War began.
This post needs a little bit of clarification. As much as possible I try to avoid two characters having the same name in my campaign world. It happens often enough in real life and in real history, but it easily confuses people (Just try and explain the Norman Conquest of England to someone). Unfortunately, I couldn’t avoid having two people with the same name in this case because one of my players wanted to name their character after an imagined hero of the past. I’m getting around to filling the gaps and now that hero of the past has his own story below. This post details Amalgami the Hero of Old, not Amalgami the Betrayer.
Amalgami the Hero was known as the Lightning Knight. He joined the other heroes of the Dragon War in casting down their draconic oppressors. He was a son of Zeus and his father gifted him with power over lightning and storms. Amalgami made friendships easily and if it weren’t for him the heroes of the Dragon War may never have worked together to accomplish their great deeds. At the conclusion of the war he slumbered along with the other heroes to return when the world needed him again.
Zeus found himself attracted to Brina, a priestess of his wife, Hera. Zeus will be Zeus, so he had his way with Brina and then left her to the anger of his wife. Infuriated that one of her own clergy would betray her (regardless of Brina’s own wishes in the encounter), Hera decreed a similar punishment that was given to Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis. Brina would never deliver her child on dry land.
Previous: Cimmerian Timeline Part 4
I’m taking a swing at finishing more of the Cimmerian Timeline, but this entry is not chronologically synced with the others. Instead, this post will be about what I’ve written for the first five heroes of the Dragon War. Where do their exploits stand in time prior to the events leading directly to the Dragon War? What year did Tracy steal all those weapons? How long did Jovy and Cecilia travel for? Now’s as good a time as any to input that information into the Timeline. Some of those events are still dependent on other factors though before I decide the specific year in the Timeline. Because of that, I’m only putting in Tentineh, Jovy, and Cecilia’s backgrounds.
954BCE: Hymniara was born along the western Caspian coast.
945BCE: Tentineh was born to a merchant couple in Greshen Valley. His mother had been stung by a wyvern in her youth. The wyvern’s poison still festered in her body and it transferred into Tentineh, giving him great physical and magical strength.
941BCE: Hymniara began running with the followers of Artemis and considered joining their band permanently.
939BCE: Hymniara’s dreams were cut short when she encountered Zeus in the form of a trout. The pair enjoyed carnal relations. Hymniara declared the loss of her innocence to Artemis. She left the band on good terms with a gift of fish scale armor.
938BCE: Hymniara gave birth to Cecilia. Tentineh began his apprenticeship to a wizard and descendant of Sadroston.
937BCE: While still a babe, jealous Hera sent scorpions to poison and kill Cecilia. Instead of dying, Cecilia slew the scorpions and ate them!
933BCE: Jovy was born to a farmer couple in Zeus’s Canvas.
930BCE: Tentineh completed his apprenticeship two years early, already having surpassed his master. He started traveling to learn more about the four elements and how to channel their energy.
926BCE: Cecilia grew into beauty and womanhood. Men approached her and her mother asking for her hand in marriage. Cecilia challenged them to contests of skill and might. If she lost she would marry them. If she won, the men owed her their shield and armor. Many men lost their panoplies and Cecilia stayed a maid.
921BCE: Cecilia left home to travel the world and do great deeds in honor of her patron gods, Artemis and Zeus.
920BCE: Tentineh completed his travels. He built himself a tower in Greshendale and studied summoning magic within his warded home.
Cecilia settled with the Elves of Bigby’s Forest for a time and learned much from then. She mastered wrestling, swordplay, and the basics of magic. While staying with the Elves Cecilia defeated many wolves, bears, basilisks, and orcs.
915BCE: Jovy had grown to be an unruly teenager. He avoided his responsibilities as often as he could, electing to swim, play, and steal rather than complete his farmyard chores. Jovy’s father arranged an early marriage in the hopes that it would force his son to settle down. Jovy took off in the night and never returned home. He journeyed westward, stealing valuables and girls’ hearts along the way.
914BCE: Cecilia learned everything she could and her time with the Elves came to an end. She traveled to the Caspian Sea and followed the coast eastward.
Jovy’s journey took him southward along the Caspian shore.
913BCE: Jovy reached the Aractrash River where Hermes spoke to him. The Olympian told Jovy to build a giant bowl and push it into the River. Jovy built the wooden bowl, but he lacked the strength to push it into the river. At this time Cecilia arrived on her journey. She easily pushed the bowl into the river. As she did so the bowl turned into a double-masted ship with a crew of phantom sailors. Jovy and Cecilia sailed the ship, named Mira Miro, into the Caspian Sea where they slew many sea monsters.
910BCE: Satisfied with all he discovered about of summoning magic, Tentineh finally decided to get married. A ceremony wedded him to his long-time maid and assistant, Fafarella. Fafarella was soon pregnant and the line of Tentineh continued.
908BCE: A troll army attacked Greshendale. Tentineh was unable to defeat the army solely with his command over elemental fire. Forced into a corner, the great wizard summoned a beast from the fiery pit, a great fire slaad. The monster slew the trolls and rested afterwards to regain its strength. Fearful that the people of Greshendale might be the next to feel the slaad’s evil heat, Tentineh poured over old scripts and tomes for a method to seal the slaad away.
Jovy and Cecilia defeated the majority of the sea monsters in the Caspian, freeing the sea for the people of Cimmeria to sail and fish upon. Cecilia returned to her home and protected the growing coastal town from the prevalent monster threats of the time. Jovy stayed upon the Caspian Sea to survey Those Blasted Islands in the sea.
907BCE: Tentineh’s search proved successful. He found a ritual to bind the slaad into an eternal prison. The beast was contained. not wanting to resort to such magic again, Tentineh began training the people of Greshendale to fight and cast magic despite the rule of the dragons that forbade such practices.
906BCE: Jovy completed his survey of Those Blasted Islands. He began transporting people from the Caspian coast to the islands to colonize them. Jovy proclaimed himself King of the Caspian and he began taxing/extorting valuables and commodities from his citizens.
901BCE: A horde of giants attacked Greshendale. Left with no other choice, Tentineh revealed his army in open violation of the dragons’ laws. The giants were defeated, but greater dangers might come as a result.
Jovy took some time off as King of the Caspian to visit the Dwarves in Jord. He fit in like fingers in a glove and became a minor celebrity to the Hill Dwarves.
900BCE: Tentineh called the heroes of the land together and the Dragon War began.
One of the purposes of this writing is to connect the stories of the mythical heroes in my campaign world. Cecilia’s story connects to Jovy’s because they both had adventures in the Caspian Sea. Thus, I’m also going to repeat verbatim a few of the paragraphs from Cecilia’s story in Jovy’s. No apologies!
Jovy followed the guidance of Hermes to become the first captain to sail the Caspian Sea. Hermes gifted Jovy with the first double masted frigate capable of tacking against the wind. Jovy along with his friend and companion, Cecilia, rid the Caspian of monsters making it safe for other voyagers. Jovy declared himself King of the Caspian, exacting tribute from coastal settlements and pillaging those that did not comply with his demands. He named and colonized Those Blasted Islands in the sea and fought to protect the colonies during the Dragon War. He imprisoned the gold dragons. When Jovy retired he beached the Mira Miro at the mouth of the Aractrash River to found the city of Lordodo. Jovy joined the other heroes of the Dragon War in their slumber beneath the earth, awaiting the destruction of the Orbs of Dragonkind and the return of the dragons.
Jovy was born to a group of farmers living in the area around what is now Jipangu. Jovy was a rebellious child, often shirking his duties to swim in the river, whittle toys out of wood, or steal eggs from the hen house. His father arranged an early marriage for Jovy, hoping that the responsibility of a wife and family would straighten Jovy out. Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect. Jovy skipped town the night before the wedding.
He journeyed west to the Caspian and then south following the shore. Along the way Jovy earned money by working odd jobs or more often by stealing. By the time he reached the sea he had himself a nice pair of clothes along with a good set of armor and matching sabers. Jovy found that his natural charm and his wanderer’s mystique attracted many of the young women in the villages he passed through who were bored of their provincial lives just like he once was. In addition to leaving a trail of theft and robberies, Jovy also left a trail of broken hearts and pregnant teenagers.
Throughout his journey, Jovy made offerings to the patron god of thieves and vagabonds, Hermes. Joy saw his life as a dark place with only toil ahead, but for the grace of Hermes who led him towards a full and joyous life. Jovy often spoke to Hermes and as he went south towards the Aractrash River, Hermes spoke back to him. The god of travel told Jovy, “When you reach the Aractrash River chop down the five largest trees. Use the wood of these trees to build a large bowl, as big as a room. Then get the bowl into the river. Do this and I will turn the your life’s fate from woolen thread to cloth of gold.”
Jovy followed Hermes’ command. When he reached the River he located the five largest trees and cut them down with an axe he’d pilfered from a farmer’s woodpile. He bought a saw with stolen gold to make planks out of logs. He boiled water in a large soup pot and painstakingly bent the logs, inch by inch. Jovy nailed them together to make the largest bowl he had ever seen, rounded with a rough bottom. Undoubtedly any soup the gods wished to drink from it would leak out the sides, but Jovy had done it! Hermes’ bowl was completed.
Jovy strained and pushed to get the bowl into the river. He pushed, he pulled, he tied a rope around it and put his back into it. Nothing worked. Then a woman showed up wearing fish scales for armor with a golden sword slung at her hip. She introduced herself as Cecilia the daughter of Zeus and asked his name. Jovy said, “Me name is Jovy. Apollo told me to build this here bowl and put it in tha’ river. He promised a reward. Perhaps iffen you help me we can share it.” Cecilia shrugged and shoved the bowl into the water with a single push.
The bowl splashed into the jungle water and began to grow. It lengthened and tapered at the ends, forming a streamlined structure. Huge poles grew out of the bottom rising up into the sky. Wooden slats protruded from the internal sides and then joined together to make two decks. Ropes and sails appeared from nowhere to fill out the rigging of the ship. An anchor and chain grew out of a whorl on the wooden side. Lastly, the steering wheel slowly rose from the upper deck at the rear of the ship. Floating on the river before Jovy and Cecilia was the first sailing ship complete with two masts, a forward boom for a jib and almost a dozen sails. A crew of sailors stood at attention on deck, summoned by the same magic that created the ship.
“Are you to take that into sea against the monsters? asked Cecilia.
“Aye lassy, and I’ve a mind for you to come along too iffen you be willing,” said Jovy.
“An adventure on the open water? I’d like that.”
Jovy named the vessel the Mira Miro and he took his place at the steering wheel as Captain. Cecilia joined him, wearing her fish scale armor with her golden sword always at the ready. After sacrificing a bull to Poseidon, Jovy’s command set the sailors to work taking the Mira Miro downriver. Fresh water turned to salt as they reached the Caspian Sea. Almost immediately something rocked the ship. A great tentacle rose out of the depths and attempted to drag the ship down into the water. Cecilia called out her father’s name and jumped into the water with sword in hand. Her fish scale armor allowed Cecilia to swim through the water with ease and breath it as well. She sliced off the monster’s tentacle with her golden sword, then followed the beast into the deep as it retreated. She slew it and reemerged with a giant octopus eye to document her achievement. Jovy congratulated Zeus’s daughter before setting sail once more.
The heroic duo traveled across the width and breadth of the Caspian, slaying monsters as they went. Cecilia slew monsters through brute force, but Jovy had more finesse. He tricked monsters into giving him their treasure without a fight. He snuck into their caves and grottos at night to slay them in their sleep. He convinced them he was a god and that they were better off swimming ashore than facing his wrath. Jovy hoped his accomplishments would impress Cecilia and win her heart, but she never looked at him with the doe eyes he had come to recognize in his conquests.
Once while sailing Jovy asked her, “Why ain’t a lass such as yerself married?”
Cecilia said, “I vowed to Zeus that I would give my virginity to no man who could not take it for himself.”
“Aye. I’ve seen ye fight. Twould ‘ave to be a mighty man indeed who can claim yer maidenhood.” And I am not that man, thought Jovy to himself. He gave up any hopes of winning Cecilia. They had passed the time on deck by arm wrestling many times. He had never beaten her.
When the pair had defeated most of the monsters in the Caspian they parted ways. Cecilia returned to her village to make it the first fishing town on the Caspian. Jovy stayed upon the water in the Mira Miro. He traveled across every inch of what he called Those Blasted Islands in the sea. He named each one according to who he thought best suited to live there after exploring them. Jovy went to the Caspian’s rapidly increasing coastal population to gather colonists for Those Blasted Islands. The islands were soon inhabited with Jovy proclaiming himself King of the Caspian.
Jovy took tribute from more than just the colonies on Those Blasted Islands. He also claimed all the towns and villages within 10 miles of the sea as his own (excepting those close to Cecilia). Those who would not submit were pillaged.
Jovy took some time off from sailing and became good friends with the Hill Dwarves of Jord. Some say he was even buried in Jord. Others say he was buried on Jovy Isle where his pleasure mansion once stood.
When the Dragon War started, Jovy joined up along with Cecilia. He imprisoned the gold dragons. When the time came for the heroes of the Dragon War to sleep, Jovy beached his ship at the same location he first made the large bowl for Hermes. The Mira Miro remains there to this day, now serving as the city hall for Lordodo.

Whew! This one took a lot longer to write than I thought it would. A little late for “D&D Mondays.” I should still be able to keep up with one post a week though.
Cecilia the Salt Champion was the daughter of Zeus and the mortal Hymniara. The founder of the city that now bears her name and liberator of the Caspian, Cecilia slew the great sea beasts that prowled the sea. She accomplished many other great tasks on land as well as befriending the dolphins and the people of the sea. During the Dragon War, Cecilia imprisoned the black dragons. All her tasks were done in the name of her lord-father, Zeus, while wielding a shining sword that he gave to her. The sword was buried with her deep beneath the earth where Cecilia slumbers, awaiting the return of the black dragons.

1070BCE: Human raids into Eastern Cimmeria discovered that the Orcs now staunchly defended the Goblins.
1068BCE: The Conclave declared war against the Orcs and their new Goblin allies. Halfling slingers and Humans riding chariots brought the Conclave victory in set-piece battles. The Conclave sold prisoners of war into slavery, both Goblin and Orc alike.
Hades marched upon Colchis once more. Aeëtes fought the undead off with a combined army of trained soldiers and Goblin slaves used as shock troops.
1065BCE: The Human attacks pushed the Orcs and Goblins further east. Meanwhile, the Goblins integrated into the Orc tribes and switched from their old pantheon to worshiping the Olympians alongside the Orcs.
1050BCE: Time passed and the borders between the Conclave, the Orcs, and the independent Goblins stabilized. One hundred years of war resulted in the defeat of the Goblin gods and their absorption through syncretism into the Hellenic pantheon. The Olympians began to entertain themselves with their new sandbox full of people.
1049BCE: The Olympians longed for the exciting times prior to the Trojan war. What was so great about the Heroic Age? Monsters! The Olympians dredged up all sorts of monsters from Tartarus. Trolls, sea serpents, krakens, giants, chimeras, basilisks, beholders, lycanthropes, dinosaurs, and even dragons! All of these beasts and more were set upon the mortals of Cimmeria.
1047BCE: The new dragons of Cimmeria found the spartoi soldiers that sprouted from their planted teeth severely weakened in form but extremely loyal to the dragons themselves. These new soldiers were dubbed Kobolds.
1046BCE: A red dragon named Kenderax attacked Fangaroot along with thousands of Kobold soldiers. Kenderax incinerated Karnafaust in the initial attack, preventing any organized defense against the draconic invasion. Without leadership the Dwarven citizens fled south.
1045BCE: The new sea monsters in the Caspian all but ended the fishing industry. Certain death awaited any ship that goes more than a few dozen feet from shore.
1044BCE: Orc culture always promoted physical combat as a rite of passage for the young. After the end of the Goblin War young Orcs had started fighting each other to prove their worth. The elders of the tribes saw the self-destructive path this would lead the Orc race down. They directed the violent energy of the Orc youth outwards instead of inwards, specifically towards the Shacklack Desert. Many Orcs traveled into the Shacklack to slay the myriad of monsters there.
Makotako is the home of the Xorian navy and over 35,000 people. It is an important trade point for ships in the Caspian and is also the only significant opposition to the navy of Lordodo. The Persians also field a navy, but it is woefully underequipped and badly trained. The other possible opponents, Poseidon’s undersea monsters, are few because the Caspian Sea is not connected to his home waters of the Mediterranean and because of Cecilia’s heroic genocide. The only know way for Poseidon’s forces to get to the Caspian without teleportation is to enter the mouth of Charybdis near Sicily and exit out at Jovy’s Spitoon.
Makotako was an independent city until fifty years ago when the Jevaninada I conquered it with his superior land forces. He slowly imposed Xorian law on the public giving them time to adjust and poured money into the local economy by paying for the formation of the navy.
The Xorian navy contains close to one hundred biremes and is commanded by the reformed pirate, Admiral Willis. He still enjoys leading his men into battle, but is unable to do so most of the time due to his administrative responsibilities. In addition to being the commanding officer of the navy Willis is also in charge of the docks and the city at large. Since he must split his duties he will often have a subordinate take over one of his jobs while he focuses on something more crucial in another area.
Makotako’s main export is lumber. The city is right next to the legendary Bigby’s Forest which has an abundance of wood. Bigby’s Forest was created by a magician who lived long ago named, of course, Bigby. He is the wizard who first designed the big hand spells that are commonly used by force specializing magicians today. Apparently the famous wizard had been studying another spell that creates an entire woodland forest out of nothing. His magic still lives on today and regenerates any of the cut down trees within a few weeks. Consequently the forest’s borders have been constantly expanding as the trees are effectively immortal. Some people worry that this growth will eventually consume nearby towns, but that would not happen for at least two centuries, so the problem is ignored.
Makotako has a few farms surrounding it, but not enough to be self-sufficient. It must trade with the rest of Xoria to get the food it needs. Most of the residents of Makotako are either in the navy or work in a shipwright’s shop. Xoria refuses to have just one contract for their ships being built as they want to encourage competition in the city’s main industry. This has indeed lowered the prices of the ships, but also makes how the Xorian biremes are constructed a widely known fact. The weaknesses of the ships are well-known, but Admiral Willis has refused to change the means of construction.
Surprsingly, amid all this industry, a successful apparel and barber shop is run by the Elf, Korias. He designs all the clothing, shoes, and haircuts that the nobility across the Magical Lands wear. His shop is called Korias’ Clothing. It is open to all, but requires five gold pieces for entry to prove that you can, “damn the expense.” Korias has notably refused to become a Dragovinian even though the coveted status was offered to him.
The best thing about Gazeara is that everyone shares everything. The worst thing about Gazeara is that everyone shares everything. Gazeara is the largest communist society in Cimmeria with over 25,000 people. No one in the city need worry about food, shelter, or safety. The government takes care of everyone’s basic needs, but restricts their activities beyond that. This restriction is accomplished through a massive amount of scrying dweomers on the city streets and in people’s homes. If an infraction of the rules is detected the police can find that person later to arrest them.
Originally Gazeara was a monarchy, but over a hundred years ago a tyrant, King Shardamar, took control of the small kingdom from his benevolent father. King Shardamar established the scrying dweomers to stop crime, but later used them to stop treason and dissent. As people realized what he was doing they revolted. King Shardamar put the revolt down with a hired force from Phoenix. When King Shardamar’s incompetent son, Shardamar II, took the throne he was unable to satisfy the people’s demands and unwilling to sacrifice his wealth in order to hire the necessary force to put down a revolt. After his deposition the citizens of Gazeara elected a new leader, Leopold Anigama. Anigama has ruled for three and a half decades, faithfully following the public’s original mandate of making everyone equal.
Gazeara’s communist form of government led to war with its monarchical neighbor, Xoria. The large militia force allowed Gazeara to fend off the Xorian Empire’s forces prior to the formation of the First Alliance. In the war of the First Alliance, Anigama was slain by the leader of the Seven Rages, Grave. Without their leader the people of Gazeara were unable to rally. After the war they were subjugated by the Xorians.
While the Xorians ruled the city, they could not change the cultural conventions of the Gazearans. The ideals of communism persisted, leading to many minor revolts that were put down mercilessly. The trend continued when Jevaninada II took control. Unfortunately for the king, while his army was away fighting in the Battle of Phoenix, Gazearan rebels opened the gates of the city and allowed the Rebel army inside. Jevaninada II sent the Amazons back to siege Gazeara. They have surrounded the city which is now led by Major Dactirian of the Rebels.
Gazeara is a port city built along the shore of the Caspian Sea as well as along the banks of the Great Divide. The city is built in a traditional style with various farms and orchards surrounding the walled interior where commercial shops can be found. Ships launch from the harbor daily to find pearls, and to catch fish and urchins. Bigby’s Forest is nearby and the citizens hold hunts there on festival days with the permission of the Elves. The professions of the town are given respect according to what they deserve, but none are given more to eat than any other.
Before King Shardamar II was forced off his throne he used his wealth to replace the fountain outside the royal palace with a massive, immortal flame. The flame was placed on a three foot pedestal with a ten foot radius. The whole construction is called the Great Fire. The fire was meant to be used to offer sacrifices to the gods during special ceremonies and to always light the way to the palace for those who wished to find it in the city. Shardamar II and his family were executed by being thrown into the Great Fire soon after it was created. Anigama executed other traitors and spies with the Great Fire and now all capital offenses are carried out via the Great Fire.
Logan of Gazeara is a powerful warlock who attained his power via extensive study of the Great Fire. When his research was complete, Logan went to the Fire at midday and performed a secret ritual. He was gifted amazing power, but at unknown cost. Logan went on to join the Adventurers’ Guild of Phoenix and participate in the Battle of Phoenix. After the Battle he went to Jipangu to train new recruits in the army, but upon learning that Gazeara had been freed from Xorian control by the Rebels he quickly traveled to the city to assist in defending his homeland and its culture.
Speaking of Gazeara’s culture, ridiculous is the word most often used by outsiders to describe it. During his life people worshiped Anigama as an immortal even though neither of his parents were immortals and that has continued into the afterlife. Anigama is present in the city’s art even more often than Zeus. A popular image is the communist dictator battling Shardamar II for the crown on top of the royal keep. Art that doesn’t pay homage to Anigama is simply seen as inferior. There was a time when art that did not feature Anigama was burned in the Great Fire, but that practice has thankfully gone extinct.
The church and clergy of Gazeara functions like a tax collection agency. The people pray to Anigama and the Olympians for help in battle, to accomplish a daily task, or to save a sick relative. On holidays during his lifetime Anigama would speak to the people and perform miracles such as lifting the royal castle up from its foundations and putting it back down or causing the sky to pour down rain one minute and sunshine the next. Reenactments of these events continue today on religious holidays. Outsiders who visit Gazeara are stumped as to why Zeus lets these people survive with their daily blasphemies.
A number of strange customs have been created since the revolution. When someone tells you they like something that you own, it is socially necessary to give your possession to that person. You may then say you like something back, but not the item you just gave to that person. In the evening the people of Gazeara climb ladders to their roofs to watch the stars come out and talk with their neighbors. Gazearans also eat their food with tiny silver weapons they call utensils.
Gazeara has an amazing city layout well-suited for defense. Food can be imported by land, river and the sea making the city almost impossible to siege. The city design of Gazeara includes several walls and traps for the unsuspecting invader. The keep itself is a well built stone castle, but the real strength of Gazeara lies in its people. The Gazearans love the freedom they took from Shardamar and will never surrender to another monarch. The first invasion of Xoria was turned back by farmers, women, and children fighting with pitchforks, butcher knives, and walking sticks while they rode on goats and mules. The free education Gazearans receive teach them sound strategies to use incase of an invasion and give them the mental strength to never give in to tyranny.
A visitor to Gazeara has little to no hope of having a good time. There are a few sights to see, such as the castle, the central garden, the Great Fire, and the military museum, but none of them are worth the price. Any visitors must show proof of being a diplomat or be on a mercy mission or else they will fall under Gazearan tax laws. All of their magical items are forfeit upon entry to the city and not returned under any circumstances. Those who refuse upon stepping through the gates are tried for treason and quickly sentenced to death. If a tourist actually wants to stay for a few days they will find that failure to follow Gazearan customs leads to quick social ostracism.
Cecilia is a fishing town and is the home to over 40,000 residents. Cecilia acts as Xoria’s main trading port with Persia and the other cities of the Magical Lands. It is the most diverse place in all of the Magical Lands due to the many different cultures that come to Cecilia to trade, but also due to the strong tourist attraction due to the city’s seaside nature.
Cecilia is named after the daughter of Zeus and one of his mortal liaisons, Hymniara. The original Cecilia followed both Artemis and Zeus as her patron gods and became a heroine to rival Theseus in her accomplishments. She rid the Caspian Sea of the gigantic monsters that made it impossible to fish or row a boat across it. She founded the first fishing town of the Caspian Sea and named the village after herself. Cecilia led the village and protected it from the smaller sea monsters which emerged from the depths until she died.
Merfolk, Sahuagin, and other humanoid races of the water honor Cecilia because she killed the great sea serpents that kept the aquatic races’ populations small. The town of Cecilia has become a sacred place for the underwater races and because the town is considered hallowed ground it has become the official place to conduct peace talks between the different races of the Caspian Sea when such things are necessary. Almost all the religious rites of the aquatic people are performed on or near the beach of Cecilia. The races of the water allow landwalkers to view their ceremonies, but have imposed the rule that all tourists respect them and follow proper rules of etiquette to watch the rituals without repercussions. A small pamphlet that details such rules is sold by the city to those who wish to view the elaborate water rituals.
As one might guess from Cecilia’s waterside location the main businesses of the town are fishing and trading. The town has the largest civilian fleet on the Caspian Sea and it needs protection both from the weather and from the beasts that live in the ocean. Spellcasters capable of weather control are in high demand in Cecilia. The demand is so great that the clergy of Aeolus set up their main temple there. To deal with the underwater threats such as Sahauguin, Nagas, Dragon Turtles, Merrow, and other beasts of the sea a chapter of the Mercenary’s Guild from Phoenix opened in Cecilia. At the start of the Second Alliance War the Xorian government took control of the guild and conscripted or enslaved all of its members.
The diet of the townspeople consists mostly of fish, sea urchins, and seaweed, but also includes staple crops and fruits grown inland to the west by independent farmers. Persian spices and other delicacies are served daily on the tables of the rich and served more often than one would expect on those of the common folk. The classic dish of Cecilia that every visitor tries is the meat of a plesiosaur served with cayenne pepper from Persia. The interesting combination is something the locals have grown fond of and tourists are wary to eat twice.
The government of Cecilia is headed by Commodore Taydasa. Taydasa is the son of the previous lady in charge of Cecilia, Shinagana. Taydasa replaced his mother when Jevaninada II’s reign began. He is in control of the city’s docks, administration, and the navy, but Taydada prefers his administrative duites over his naval ones. He will have his subordinates compensate for any duties he cannot perform while distracted by his other jobs.
