The tensions of the Age of Monsters erupted into full-scale war with mortals on one side and dragons on the other. The mortals were led by an alliance of ten legendary Heroes. To defeat the dragons the Heroes of the Dragon War used powerful magicks to bind the dragon monarchs within enchanted orbs. These artifacts were called the Orbs of Dragonkind.
900BCE: The mortal led armies of Gorwinua, Amalgami, Toffoun, and Tentineh operated in the open, taking actions to counter the rule of the dragons. Tentineh called the heroes of the land together to organize the overthrow of the dragon hegemony. Gorwinua, Amalgami, Toffoun, and Tentineh gathered in Greshendale along with Danar, Jovy, Cecilia, Shratalanda, Tracy, and Bigby.
Shratalanda revealed the plan she had begun enacting nearly a century before. The dragons were divine creatures and could thus never be truly killed, but they could be imprisoned. What could bind a beast as powerful as a dragon though? Shratalanda suggested using the dragon’s magical powers against each other. Since the dragons ruled in pairs, the power of each could be turned against the other.
The group of heroes even had an ally among the dragons. Rilopenaril hated the evil rule his relatives had imposed upon the mortals of Cimmeria. He had been working with Shratalanda to steer events towards the Dragon War which now began. The ten heroes vowed to combine their forces and exploit the disunity of the dragons. Each of the pairs could be brought down and imprisoned one by one.
899BCE: The ten heroes struck quickly, imprisoning three pairs of dragon monarchs, white, black, and brass. Three powerful orbs were constructed to contain the dragons. One of each pair was locked within the orb while the other was bound to protect it from all who would seek to misuse or destroy it. Tikanile was imprisoned within the White Orb with Shivara set as his guard. Pithwatolzar was imprisoned within the Black Orb with Kovan’rorshac set as his guard. Hazorshrakan was imprisoned within the Brass Orb with Forsoman set as her guard. These orbs were dubbed the Orbs of Dragonkind.
While the ten heroes of the Dragon War were united in their efforts, the same could not be said for all the leaders of Cimmeria. The heroes asked for help from the mortal leaders of Cimmeria and most came to their aid. King Cogard of the Dwarves wished to remain out of the war, but Shaelin’s attack on Fangaroot made neutrality impossible. He and his four sons joined the fight against the dragons. The Elves of Valor and Hardtop fought for the mortal armies. Tracy brought Crafterton and Nomingburg into the fight. The human settlements of Nox and Phoenix joined the mortals as well.
Queen Shortrastor made the opposite decision. She provided the ground soldiers for Bavastatner’s war against the Orcs. King Aeetes of Colchis, an ally of dragons from the Heroic Age, used his considerable power to aid the white dragons when he could.
898BCE: The dragons organized their defenses against the heroes and their armies. Mortals loyal to the dragons rose up to defend their masters. The flames of the Dragon War grew hot as battles raged all across Cimmeria.
897BCE: The dragons led their combined armies to attack Sheerzen. They were constantly outflanked on their journey there. The Heroes always seemed to be one step ahead of the dragon-led army. Unknown to the dragons, this was due to the power of the Orbs. Anyone holding an Orb could detect the movement of nearby dragons, allowing perfect scouting of the draconic forces. The thrust towards Sheerzen was outmaneuvered and defeated.
896BCE: Rising tensions due to the Dragon War caused a civil war among the Elves of the Dry Woods. One Elven group felt that draconian leadership brought them further away from their wild independence. The other group of Elves felt their deep connection to nature could only be preserved by allying themselves with dragons, the pinnacle of natural existence. The freedom-loving Elves were led by Bigby. Cordax and Hashterainon, nominally led the dragon-allied Elves, but the green dragon monarchs were often occupied elsewhere during the Dragon War. In their place, Eathirilu fought against Bigby’s forces.
The sons of Cogard cooperated for the war effort, but privately they grew to hate each other. They saw the war effort as a competition for the succession to the throne and only one could win.
895BCE: All the dragon monarchs, excluding Rilopenaril, held a council to discuss their options in the war. All the fronts were losing save Bavastatner in the east where Orcs died by the hundreds. The other dragon patriarchs were afraid to send their offspring into battle, fearing for the death of their children. Bavastatner had no such fears. He trained his children to attack columns of soldiers, how to route out hidden settlements, and how to strike fear into the hearts of mortals. Bavastatner was winning in the east because in the east every dragon fought for themselves instead of recruiting weak mortals to do their fighting for them. Realizing their error the other dragon monarchs returned to their respective realms and began training their children for war.
894BCE: The Heroes of the Dragon War launched an assault on the lair of the copper dragon patriarchs Thaitonzao and Blathorwa. The draconic pair had prepared by calling their children in to defend their stronghold, but they were not ready for the forces the Heroes had amassed. They used the Colored Dragon Orbs to control dragons of matching color. White, black, and brass dragons descended upon the copper dragons and both sides died by the dozens. Of the Heroes, only Danar and Shratalanda felt guilty for using the dragons in this way. The rest felt the evil of the dragons deserved any punishment. Blathorwa was imprisoned inside the Copper Orb and the Heroes set Thaitonzao to guard her.
893BCE: Eathirilu led the dragon-allied Elves of the Dry Woods in a raid against Bigby’s encampment. The raid proved an amazing success. Bigby himself was captured along with the Copper Orb of Dragonkind. Eathirilu ensured that no messages left the Dry Woods before beginning preparations for an attack on Phoenix.
Knowing that he needed additional assistance, Eathirilu called upon the dark fey of the forest. Davonisi, the druidic leader of the hostile Unseelie faeries, answered Eathirilu’s call. She joined his march through the countryside towards Phoenix. Davonisi’s fey scouted ahead and committed unspeakable atrocities against every mortal they encountered on the way. None were left alive to bring word of the army’s approach to Phoenix. Eathirilu was unsettled by Davonisi’s actions and began to wonder which side was truly just in the Dragon War.
892BCE: Eathirilu and Davonisi’s forces approached Phoenix, but were surprised to find the city well-defended. Their opponents had been forewarned. Eathirilu felt that the attack should be called off while Davonisi was vehement that they continue. The two argued and came to blows. Davonisi defeated Eathirilu in single combat and took command of the army. They assaulted Phoenix, but the defenses of the Heroes proved more than adequate. Davonisi’s forces were crushed, the Copper Orb of Dragonkind was recovered, and Bigby was freed from captivity. Davonisi and Eathirilu escaped to fight another day.
Phoenix had successfully prepared itself due to a secret feature of the Dragon Orbs. The Orbs could be used to communicate with anyone else who held one. Before his capture, Bigby had used the Copper Orb to warn the other Heroes of the Dragon War. The Heroes then had ample time to organize the defense of Phoenix.
891BCE: Invigorated by their success at Phoenix the Heroes of the Dragon War moved upon Bavastatner’s kingdom in the Shacklack Desert. Bavastatner’s children were the fiercest of all the dragons, trained to fight from their previous conflicts with the Heroes and Gorwinua’s Orkin army. Surviving in the desert proved a challenge as well. Despite these impediments the Heroes managed to pierce Bavastatner’s defenses. They imprisoned his wife Renveshalhiarisv inside the Blue Dragon Orb and set Bavastatner to guard it.
As the Heroes of the Dragon War were celebrating their victory, a flight of silver dragons came down from the north. Before his capture Bavastatner had called for reinforcements from the Silver Patriarch twins, Jimarohzaj and Falorn. Surprisingly, an armored humanoid rode the back of Jimarohzaj. The Heroes were unprepared for this sudden attack. The silver dragons inflicted heavy casualties on the mortal army. Grief-stricken, Tracy the Halfling took the Blue Orb and ordered Bavastatner to defend the victims of the silver dragon attack. Bavastatner silently took to the air and ruthlessly slaughtered the silver dragons. Seeing that they could no longer win, the Dragon Rider lifted his spear into the air and the silver dragons retreated.
890BCE: The armies of the Heroes were decimated after their capture of Bavastatner. They took some time to regroup, recruit, and resupply. The silver dragons took no such break. The Dragon Rider led the silver dragons to attack settlements all across Cimmeria. Freezing breath rained down everywhere. No one was safe.
889BCE: The people of Cimmeria blamed the Heroes of the Dragon War for the Dragon Rider’s attacks. If the Heroes had not disobeyed the dragon’s laws, then no one would be punished. Tentineh called the Heroes together and organized their response. The next time the Dragon Rider attacked a village, the Heroes were ready. They attempted to capture or kill the Dragon Rider, Jimarohzaj, and Falorn, but the powerful trio escaped. Attacks on unprotected villages continued, but with reduced frequency.
888BCE: The Heroes of the Dragon War recognized that the only way to end the silver dragon attacks was to bind Jimarohzaj and Falorn. Fully recovered from their battle with Bavastatner they prepared to intercept the next silver dragon raid. The flight of dragons was ambushed. Falorn was imprisoned within the Silver Orb and Jimarohzaj was set to guard him. The Dragon Rider fell from the sky, but landed on the back of a young silver dragon. With his patriarchs defeated, the unnamed warrior fled into the Dominarie Mountains with the remnants of the silver dragon flight.
887BCE: Eathirilu and Davonisi patched up their differences and worked together to re-energize the dragon-allied Elves. While he and many others feared the war was already lost, they were not prepared to surrender just yet. With the new army formed, Eathirilu awaited the command of the dragons.
886BCE: The remaining dragon patriarchs gathered with their armies in Apollo’s Plains. The red dragons, Invernix and Sartoria; the green dragons, Cordax and Hashterainon; the gold dragons, Agohimano and Hontalawi; and the bronze dragon, Langudina. Rilopenaril the traitor did not join his brethren. Giants, Ogres, Humans, and Elves made up the dragons’ armies.
The draconic forces marched eastward and burnt everything as they went. No settlement, no person, no blade of grass escaped the wrath of the dragons. Directly in their path was the old seat of the Conclave, Phoenix.
885BCE: Finally realizing the evil of those he served, Eathirilu left the dragon’s army. Many humans and elves left alongside him. Most were too ashamed of their previous actions to join with the Heroes of the Dragon War. Eathirilu swallowed his pride and went to the Heroes of the Dragon War. Shratalanda and Tentineh had faith in Eathirilu. They convinced the others to accept Eathirilu’s assistance for the final battle.
884BCE: The Heroes of the Dragon War assembled with all their might west of Phoenix. They wielded the six Orbs of Dragonkind and all the dragons they could command with the powerful magic contained within the Orbs. The two sides clashed and fought for days. In the end the Heroes were victorious. The red, green and gold dragons were imprisoned within their respective Orbs. Invernix guarded the Orb containing Sartoria, Agohimano guarded the Orb containing Hontalawi, and Cordax guarded the Orb containing Hashterainon.
Langudina fled the battle into the Western Terror Mountains. The Heroes chased her down. Rilopenaril restrained his own sister as the Heroes bound her within the last Orb of Dragonkind. With all of the dragon patriarchs defeated, the Dragon War was over.
